Drunk driver crashes into utility pole shutting down major Ocean Heights roadway

Egg Harbor Township, NJ – A late-night crash involving an impaired driver took out a utility pole and shut down a key stretch of Ocean Heights Avenue, forcing early morning traffic detours and power disruption across parts of Egg Harbor Township.

The crash occurred just after midnight Monday between Steelmanville and Zion Roads, where authorities say the driver lost control and collided with a utility pole, knocking it across the roadway. The impact caused immediate road obstruction and damage to infrastructure, prompting police to shut down the section of Ocean Heights Avenue for public safety.

Utility crews were dispatched overnight and continued working into the morning to repair the damaged pole and restore normal operations. Police estimate the affected roadway will remain closed for an additional two to three hours while repairs are completed.

Egg Harbor Township Police pointed to impaired driving as the cause of the crash, calling it a preventable incident that inconvenienced “a community who are mostly responsible” but are now forced to deal with the consequences.

No information has been released yet regarding the identity of the driver or any charges filed. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
