Cumberland police arrested three people in separate incidents involving assault allegations and outstanding court warrants, with two suspects ordered held at the Allegany County Detention Center.

CUMBERLAND, Md. — The Cumberland Police Department announced three separate arrests Tuesday involving an assault investigation and two individuals wanted on active bench warrants issued by the Allegany County District Court.

The arrests occurred Monday and involved allegations ranging from first-degree assault to failure to appear in court and failure to comply with previous court orders. Two of the three defendants were remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center following initial court appearances.

Police said the arrests stemmed from unrelated incidents investigated throughout the day.

One arrest followed a reported assault at an apartment building on Paca Street, while the other two involved active bench warrants issued by the Allegany County District Court.

Authorities reminded the public that all criminal charges are allegations, and defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

Assault suspect arrested after reported apartment confrontation

Police responded to the 200 block of Paca Street Monday after receiving a report of an assault at an apartment building.

According to investigators, a man told officers he had gone to the apartment to contact a family member when another man answered the door and a confrontation followed. The victim alleged he was struck in the face and choked, suffering injuries that required medical treatment.

The suspect fled on foot before officers located him a short time later. Darryl Lemar Powell Jr., 28, of Cumberland, was arrested and charged with first-degree assault, second-degree assault and disorderly conduct. He was taken before a District Court Commissioner and ordered held on a temporary commitment at the Allegany County Detention Center.

Two arrested on active bench warrants

Earlier Monday, officers arrested Jason Apollo Crabtree, 50, of Cumberland on two active bench warrants issued Aug. 17.

The warrants allege Crabtree failed to comply with court orders related to previous charges of disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace and resisting arrest. Following his initial court appearance, Crabtree was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center without bond.

Police also arrested Benal Aaron Atar, 35, of Cumberland, on three active bench warrants issued Aug. 14 after authorities alleged he failed to appear in court on cases involving trespassing, theft and disorderly conduct.
