Stevensville, MD – A woman from Maryland’s Eastern Shore won $50,000 in the Powerball just days after her car stopped working, according to Maryland Lottery officials.

She claimed her third-tier prize on Wednesday at the Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. The winning ticket was for the December 20 drawing and matched four of the five white balls along with the red Powerball — one number shy of the $1.5 billion jackpot.

The winner, who purchased the ticket at the Dash-In located at 401 Thompson’s Creek Road in Stevensville, said the money will go toward replacing her car. The $50,000 prize is the result of a standard $2 ticket.

She and her husband, who accompanied her to claim the prize, plan to continue playing Powerball. Going forward, they said they intend to add the $1 Power Play option, which can multiply non-jackpot winnings by 2 to 10 times, and may consider the Double Play feature, which gives players a second chance to win up to $10 million.

Powerball tickets are sold in 45 states, plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The game includes nine prize tiers ranging from $4 to the jackpot. Double Play also includes nine prize levels, with prizes ranging from $7 to $10 million.
