Manchester iron worker discovers the stuck scratch-off was worth a fortune
MANCHESTER, MD – A jammed lottery machine nearly complicated a routine scratch-off purchase for a Carroll County iron worker, but the ticket stuck inside turned out to be the last one in the machine — and it delivered a staggering $1 million prize.
The Manchester resident, who has worked as an iron worker for more than 50 years, regularly plays scratch-offs and frequently buys tickets at the Sheetz at 3281 Main Street in Manchester.
During his latest visit, he selected a $20 100X the Cash ticket from a vending machine.
Then the machine jammed.
Last ticket turns into $1M prize
After receiving assistance retrieving the ticket, the man discovered he had purchased the final 100X the Cash ticket remaining in the machine.
He scanned its barcode and received a message directing him to the Lottery.
The player then scratched the ticket and uncovered a 100X symbol over a $10,000 prize.
At first, he thought the ticket was worth $10,000. After calculating the multiplier, he realized the actual prize was $1 million.
He verified the result through the My Lottery Rewards app and again at the store counter.
Both confirmed the $1 million win.
Wife reaches for calculator
The winner brought the ticket home to his wife, who initially handed it back without realizing how much it was worth.
After he encouraged her to take another look, she used a calculator and discovered the ticket was worth $1 million.
The Carroll County man claimed his prize at Maryland Lottery headquarters on Aug. 12.
Decades of work will continue
Despite the seven-figure lottery score, the longtime iron worker said he does not intend to stop working, explaining that his job keeps him active.
He has not finalized plans for the money.
Possible uses include helping his grandchildren with college expenses and making improvements to his home.
Sheetz will receive a $1,000 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
The $20 100X the Cash scratch-off launched in January with seven $1 million top prizes. Following this win, one $1 million top prize remains.
