Joppa man lands $50K win on Maryland Lottery scratch-off and plans cruise getaway

Joppa, MD — A weekend lottery tradition paid off in a big way for a Harford County man who walked away with a $50,000 prize from the Maryland Lottery’s 100X the Cash scratch-off game.

Brian Hutchison of Joppa claimed the second-tier prize on January 23 after purchasing the lucky $20 ticket at the Wawa located at 3500 Woodsdale Road in Abingdon. A regular lottery player, Hutchison said he often plays scratch-offs with his girlfriend, particularly new releases.

On the day of his win, he stopped at the Wawa while heading to his girlfriend’s home and picked up a 100X the Cash ticket, a game that had launched just weeks earlier. While scratching the ticket, he initially missed the winning number — a match on number nine — but decided to scan it with the Maryland Lottery app before tossing it.

The result showed a $50,000 win.

The surprise led to a quick celebration, and Hutchison now plans to use part of the winnings to take a cruise vacation with his girlfriend. He works as a government contractor and said the couple enjoys traveling together when not on the job.

The 100X the Cash scratch-off ticket features a top prize of $1 million. Six of those top prizes remain unclaimed. Hutchison’s $50,000 win is the first of three second-tier prizes to be claimed since the game launched.
