Fort Greene man sentenced to 25 years to life for church baby shower killing

Brooklyn, NY – What began as a celebration inside a Brooklyn church ended in gunfire and death, a crime that now carries a life sentence after a Fort Greene man was ordered to spend at least 25 years behind bars for a fatal shooting outside a baby shower.

Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced that Daquan Carter, 34, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the killing of 26-year-old Courtney Tingle. The sentence was imposed by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Eugene Guarino following Carter’s conviction for second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

The shooting occurred around 10 p.m. on March 22, 2019, outside a church annex in Prospect Heights where a baby shower was underway. Prosecutors said Tingle was attending the event with his girlfriend when he accidentally bumped into a woman inside the venue, sparking a verbal dispute involving Carter and his cousins.

According to trial evidence, Carter and three cousins drew Tingle outside onto the street. Two cousins physically assaulted the victim while Carter waited nearby. Prosecutors said Carter then produced an illegal firearm and shot Tingle four times as he lay against a parked car.

The shooting took place outside a gathering attended by hundreds of people, including children. Tingle was transported by emergency medical services to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Carter fled the scene and later left the state. When he was apprehended in November 2019, prosecutors said he provided false statements that were contradicted by eyewitness accounts, surveillance footage, and other evidence presented at trial. A jury returned guilty verdicts on November 7, 2025.
