Flame of Hope set to roll through South River as officers lace up for Special Olympics run

Thousands of law enforcement officers across New Jersey unite for annual torch relay supporting athletes

SOUTH RIVER, N.J. — South River residents will have a chance to cheer on local police officers Thursday as they carry the “Flame of Hope” through town during one of New Jersey’s most recognized fundraising events.

Members of the South River Police Department are scheduled to participate in the 43rd annual Law Enforcement Torch Run benefiting Special Olympics New Jersey.

The relay will bring officers through South River after they receive the torch from members of the East Brunswick Police Department near Old Bridge Turnpike and Racetrack Road between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Runners will then travel through the borough along Main Street before passing the torch to members of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and East Brunswick Police Department near Milltown Road and Route 18.

Residents interested in supporting the event are encouraged to gather along Main Street near Obert Street, where runners are expected to briefly stop for photographs.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is one of the largest public awareness and fundraising efforts for Special Olympics New Jersey. Each year, more than 3,000 law enforcement officers participate on 26 routes across the state, carrying the torch nearly 750 miles.

The relay concludes at The College of New Jersey in Ewing, where the Flame of Hope is used to light the cauldron during the Special Olympics New Jersey Summer Games opening ceremony.

Organizers say the event helps raise both funds and awareness for thousands of Special Olympics athletes throughout the state.
