COLORA, MD — A fast-moving attic fire caused extensive damage to a single-family home on Canterbury Court Wrdnesday afternoon, with officials estimating a total loss of $750,000 to the structure and contents.
The blaze broke out at approximately 3:54 p.m. at 13 Canterbury Court, in a residence owned by Kerry Grubb. According to the Community Fire Company of Rising Sun, which led the emergency response, the fire was discovered by an occupant of the home. There were no injuries reported.
Sixty firefighters responded to the single-alarm fire and brought it under control within 45 minutes. The fire originated in the attic of the home, though the exact cause remains under investigation, fire officials said.
The home was equipped with a smoke alarm, which was present and activated during the incident. There was no fire alarm or sprinkler system in place.
Losses from the fire are estimated at $500,000 for the structure and $250,000 for the contents. No arrests were made in connection with the incident.
Investigation continues into attic fire origin
The fire department confirmed the origin of the fire in the attic but has not released any further details on what may have sparked the blaze. “The preliminary cause is under investigation,” authorities stated in their incident report.
Despite the scale of the damage, no surrounding structures were affected, and no evacuations beyond the impacted residence were necessary. The home is considered a total loss due to the extent of damage in both the attic and the main living areas.
Officials have not indicated how long the investigation will take or whether foul play is suspected. The scene was secured after suppression efforts concluded.
