SECAUCUS, N.J. – The former superintendent of the Hudson County Office of Weights and Measures has been charged with official misconduct and theft after investigators alleged he diverted more than $250,000 into accounts used for personal gain, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.
Frank Alonso, 58, of Union City, was arrested Tuesday by members of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Special Investigations Unit following a theft investigation. He was processed at the prosecutor’s office in Secaucus and released pending his first court appearance.
Prosecutors allege two-year theft scheme
Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello announced that Alonso is charged with three counts of second-degree official misconduct, one count of second-degree pattern of official misconduct, two counts of second-degree theft by unlawful taking, and one count of third-degree theft by unlawful taking.
According to prosecutors, the alleged offenses occurred between January 2024 and January 2026. Investigators claim Alonso diverted funds intended for the Hudson Regional Health Commission, the Office of Weights and Measures, and the New Jersey Weights and Measures Association into accounts for his personal benefit.
In a separate complaint, authorities allege Alonso used checks without the account holder’s authorization for personal gain. Prosecutors said the combined reported thefts exceed $250,000.
County terminated employee after allegations
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office said the County of Hudson immediately suspended Alonso after the alleged thefts were reported. He was later terminated from his position.
The investigation remains under the jurisdiction of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.
