Gunfire victim ends up in handcuffs as Virginia Beach shooting probe takes twist

A man who arrived at a hospital with gunshot wounds was later arrested after detectives identified him as a suspect in the same shooting

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A Virginia Beach shooting investigation took an unexpected turn when a man treated for gunshot wounds was later arrested as a suspect alongside a Norfolk man in connection with the same exchange of gunfire, police said.

The incident began at approximately 8:04 p.m. on May 31 when Virginia Beach police received a ShotSpotter alert indicating gunfire in the 1200 block of Warwick Drive.

Responding officers located a crime scene but initially did not find any victims at the scene.

While officers were investigating, police learned that a gunshot victim had arrived at a local hospital. The victim was identified as Nyquez Baker, 23, of Virginia Beach.

Police said Baker was treated for gunshot wounds and his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The Virginia Beach Police Department’s Homicide Squad took over the investigation.

On June 2, detectives arrested Antonio McPherson, 24, of Norfolk. He was charged with aggravated malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and reckless handling of a firearm resulting in injury.

As the investigation continued, detectives developed additional evidence that led them to identify Baker as a second suspect in the incident.

Baker was arrested on June 3 and charged with attempted malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, reckless handling of a firearm, and possession of a firearm by a violent felon.

The investigation remains ongoing.
