FORKED RIVER, NJ – A gentle, loyal dog named Piper has spent more than 400 days waiting at the Associated Humane Societies shelter in Forked River, hoping someone will finally take her home.
Piper once had a family and a home of her own after being adopted as a young pup.
But after her owner passed away, she was returned to the shelter through no fault of her own — and she’s been there ever since.
More than a year of waiting
Shelter staff say Piper has become their longest resident, living at the facility for well over a year while watching other dogs come and go. During a short foster stay after surgery, she showed a loving, calm nature that impressed her caregivers.

According to the shelter, Piper is affectionate, enjoys belly rubs, travels well in the car, and has excellent manners. She thrives on attention and affection but prefers to be the only pet in the household.
A plea for adoption
The Associated Humane Societies says Piper’s story reflects the heartbreak shelters see every day — good dogs waiting for months, even years, for someone to give them a second chance. Staff members continue to care for her while urging potential adopters to meet her in person.
Applications for adoption are being accepted through the shelter’s website, ahscares.org/adopt, or in person at the Forked River location.

Shelter officials hope someone will soon see in Piper what they see daily — a devoted companion ready to give her heart to a new family.
