A late-night party in far south Houston ended in gunfire, a frantic drive across the city, and the death of a 17-year-old girl whose family says they are still searching for answers.
HOUSTON, TX – Two brothers have been arrested and charged in connection with the Valentine’s Day shooting death of 17-year-old Mariah Alatorre, authorities said, following an incident that began at a crowded house party and ended miles away at a hospital where the teen was pronounced dead. Enrique Aguilar, 19, faces a murder charge, while his brother, Romeo Aguilar, 18, is charged with possession of a prohibited weapon, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were first called just after midnight Friday to a party on Dagg Road in south Houston, where roughly 300 people had gathered. According to a City of Houston press release, officers were responding to a disturbance when gunfire erupted, sending partygoers running. “Later, after the party had dispersed, a juvenile female was brought to an area hospital by a private vehicle,” the release states. “The female was later pronounced dead. The friend that brought her to the hospital stated the shooting had occurred while they were at the party on Dagg Road.”
Timeline and questions surrounding medical response
Authorities later said the victim was not taken to the nearest hospital. Instead, she was driven nearly 40 miles north to an urgent care clinic near Cypress before being transferred to HCA Houston Healthcare Northwest, where she died from her injuries.
“Nothing makes sense,” the teen’s mother told KHOU in a previous interview, questioning the delay in treatment. “What happened between those hours? More questions than answers.” She said she had been trying to reach her daughter throughout the night before tracing her phone to the urgent care facility, where she was told, “Mariah has been shot.”
Prosecutors said during a court hearing Wednesday that investigators now believe Alatorre left the party unharmed in a vehicle with friends, including Enrique Aguilar. According to courtroom reporting, the group later stopped near the urgent care clinic, where Aguilar allegedly handled a firearm and the shooting occurred.
Court hearing details and arrest
Aguilar has told investigators the shooting was accidental, but that account was challenged in court. “I don’t see how someone accidentally shoots someone multiple times,” the judge said during the hearing. “Video shows you leaning over her and smirking and laughing, so I found probable cause.”
Family members told local media the victim knew and trusted Enrique Aguilar. “She trusted the wrong people,” her mother said.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said in a post on X that both brothers were arrested by the District 1 Crime Reduction Unit and the Violent Criminals Apprehension Team and booked into the Harris County Jail. Enrique Aguilar is being held on $500,000 bond and is scheduled to return to court on June 11. Romeo Aguilar is being held on $30,000 bond and is due in court Friday.
In her obituary, Alatorre was remembered as “a funny, caring, and deeply loving soul who brought joy to everyone who knew her,” noting her “generosity, compassion, and selfless nature” and close bond with her family.
