ID thief swipes $70K then gets tracked across states and busted by detective

Detective cracks $70K fraud case leading to out-of-state arrest

OAKLAND, N.J. — A suspected identity thief who allegedly stole $70,000 from a local resident was tracked across state lines and arrested after a months-long investigation, authorities said.

Police say the case began in July 2024 when a victim’s American Express account was compromised and used to make purchases and attempt a large cash transfer.

Detective Steven Albert led what officials described as a “complex” investigation, analyzing financial records, IP data and digital activity to identify the suspect.

Authorities say that work led them to Brandon Richard Delancy, 39, of Buford, Georgia.

A warrant for Delancy’s arrest was issued on New Year’s Eve, and he was taken into custody on February 18 in Lawrenceville, Georgia, by the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office.

He was later extradited to New Jersey and is now being held in Bergen County Jail pending a court appearance.

Delancy faces multiple charges, including computer crime, identity theft, theft by deception and criminal attempt.
