Suspect already jailed when charged in DC murder

WASHINGTON, DC – A 35-year-old man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection to a fatal stabbing that occurred in Northwest DC in late July, the Metropolitan Police Department announced Thursday.

The homicide took place shortly after midnight on Wednesday, July 30, in the 700 block of V Street NW. Officers from MPD’s Third District responded to a report of a stabbing and found an adult male suffering from a stab wound. The victim, identified as 31-year-old Jonathan Simmons-Miller of Gaithersburg, Maryland, was transported by DC Fire and EMS to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead despite emergency life-saving efforts.

Following a months-long investigation, MPD’s Fugitive Unit arrested Leon Bryant, 35, who has no fixed address. He was already incarcerated at the time of his arrest. Bryant is now charged with First Degree Murder While Armed under a DC Superior Court warrant.

Officials have not released additional details about the motive or circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter. The case remains under investigation.
