JACKSON – Jackson Township is a changing community that has seen an influx of Orthodox Jewish residents moving in over the past few years. To accommodate the religious requirements of the community, the township held its first-ever Chametz burning.
In the Orthodox Jewish faith, Chametz are to be burned on the Friday before Passover begins. The day is similar to the Christian “Good Friday”.
Jewish community members come out to burn the Chametz, foods forbidden on the holiday of Passover. Foods forbidden during the holiday are burned, including their packaging.
The burning was supervised by Jackson Fie Station 55 and was held Friday morning at the Larsen Road Firehouse, coordinated by the Jackson Fire Commissioners. A large roll-off dumpster was used to burn the Chametz.
