Jackson Township water main project to begin April 6 along Bennetts Mills Road

Construction tied to county repaving plan aims to improve water system capacity

Jackson Township, NJ – Get ready for some traffic problems this spring on Bennetts Mills Road.

A major infrastructure project aimed at improving how drinking water is transported and treated will begin next week along Bennetts Mills Road, township officials announced. The work will install a new pipeline designed to carry untreated groundwater to a centralized treatment facility.

Mayor Jennifer L. Kuhn said residents may have already noticed stacks of purple piping staged along the roadway, signaling the start of the Jackson Township Municipal Utilities Authority (JTMUA) project. The new system will transport raw well water from Bennetts Mills Road to the treatment plant on London Drive.

Phase 1 of the project will run from the area near 254 Bennetts Mills Road to Georgian Boulevard. Officials said the timing aligns with Ocean County’s planned repaving of Bennetts Mills Road later this year, allowing crews to complete underground work before the roadway is resurfaced.

“Phase 1 of the project will install the main from the vicinity of #254 Bennetts Mills Road to Georgian Boulevard,” Kuhn said. “This work is being done before Ocean County repaves Bennetts Mills Road.”

Additional nighttime work may occur near the intersection of Butterfly Road and Frank Applegate Road to allow for more extensive roadway closures and avoid utility conflicts.

Long-term water system improvements

The project is designed to modernize how the township handles untreated groundwater by creating a dedicated transmission line to the main treatment plant. Once completed, the system will allow water to be processed centrally before entering the distribution network.

Officials said the upgrade will improve capacity, reliability, and consistency in water treatment. “At its core, this project is about upgrading how Jackson Township moves and processes its drinking water before it ever reaches residents’ taps,” Kuhn explained.

A second phase, which will extend the pipeline along Georgian Boulevard to fully connect to the London Drive facility, has not yet been scheduled.
