Long Beach man pleads guilty to attempted murder in ax ambush attack

Prosecutors say victim suffered life-threatening injuries in early morning assault

Mineola, NY – A Long Beach man has pleaded guilty to attempted murder after prosecutors say he ambushed a former coworker and repeatedly struck him with an ax, leaving the victim with severe, long-term injuries.

Anthony Calvo, 35, entered the guilty plea Friday before Judge Robert Bogle in Nassau County Court. He is expected to be sentenced to 22 years in prison on May 1.

Attack unfolded as victim walked home from work

“Anthony Calvo stalked and ambushed a man because of a petty disagreement, barbarically striking his head and face repeatedly with an ax until the man laid dying on the sidewalk,” Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly said.

According to prosecutors, the attack occurred around 5:50 a.m. on February 13, 2025, as the 60-year-old victim walked home from his overnight shift as a taxi dispatcher. Authorities said Calvo ran up from behind and struck the victim multiple times in the head, face, and arm.

Evidence linked suspect to violent assault

After the attack, the victim managed to reach his home and alert a family member, who called 911. He was transported to Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital, where he underwent multiple surgeries for injuries to his head and jaw.

Prosecutors said surveillance video captured the suspect fleeing on a white electric bicycle. A search warrant executed days later led to the recovery of the bicycle, a mask, and the ax used in the attack, which was found to contain the defendant’s DNA.

“A year later, Calvo’s victim has survived and made strides in his recovery, beginning to communicate and relearning basic tasks like feeding himself,” Donnelly said.

Authorities said the victim remains unable to walk and continues to require ongoing medical care.
