Silver Spring man turns $500 lottery win into $50K jackpot with lucky scratch-off streak
SILVER SPRING, MD — A Montgomery County man’s routine stop to cash in a winning lottery ticket turned into a much bigger payday after one scratch-off win led directly to another worth $50,000.
The Silver Spring resident recently visited Glenmont Beer & Wine on Georgia Avenue after winning $500 on a $10 scratch-off ticket.
Instead of walking away with the cash, he decided to press his luck again.
Using $30 from the earlier prize, the man purchased a Diamonds & Gold scratch-off ticket while still inside the store.
Moments later, he scanned the ticket and discovered he had won $50,000.
Still stunned by the sudden windfall, the winner immediately called his wife and brother-in-law to share the news.
The man, who has worked in the medical field for more than seven years, said he plans to use the prize money to pay off bills.
When he is not working, he enjoys watching soccer, according to Maryland Lottery officials.
The Diamonds & Gold scratch-off launched in April and the Silver Spring winner became the first person to claim one of the game’s $50,000 prizes.
Lottery officials said three additional $50,000 prizes remain unclaimed, along with two top prizes worth $2 million each.
