Multiple commuter rail lines suspended as NJ TRANSIT urges riders to seek alternate transportation
NJ TRANSIT commuters faced major delays and service suspensions Tuesday after the Newark Draw Bridge became stuck in the open position, disrupting several key rail lines in and out of North Jersey.
According to NJ TRANSIT, Morris & Essex Line, Gladstone Branch, and Montclair-Boonton Line service was suspended in both directions as crews responded to the bridge malfunction.
“(1 of 2) Morris and Essex, Gladstone Branch, and Montclair-Boonton Line rail service is suspended in both directions due to the Newark Draw Bridge being stuck in the open position,” NJ TRANSIT posted on X.
The agency later announced that rail tickets and passes would be cross-honored on multiple alternate transit services while the disruption continues.
“(2 of 2) NJ TRANSIT rail tickets and passes are being cross honored by NJ TRANSIT bus and private carriers and PATH at Newark Penn, Hoboken and 33rd Street-NY,” the agency said.
NJ TRANSIT directed riders to visit its website for alternate service information and updates as repair crews work to restore service.
The Newark Draw Bridge is one of the most critical rail crossings in the region, carrying heavy commuter traffic into Newark and New York City. Mechanical problems at the bridge can quickly create widespread delays across the NJ TRANSIT system.
Tuesday’s disruption immediately impacted thousands of commuters traveling during the late morning and afternoon hours, particularly riders heading toward Newark Penn Station, Hoboken Terminal, and Midtown Manhattan.
Passengers were advised to expect significant delays, crowded conditions, and possible schedule changes throughout the day.
No estimated timeline for full restoration of service had been announced as of Tuesday afternoon.
