Man accused of threatening to burn down home after armed break-in

A Cumberland man is accused of breaking into a home, threatening residents with a weapon and warning he would set the house on fire, according to police.

CUMBERLAND, Md. — A Cumberland man was arrested after police say he broke into a residence, threatened the occupants with a weapon and warned that he would burn the home down.

According to the Cumberland Police Department, 37-year-old Ajax Benjamin Zavitz was arrested Sunday on an active warrant stemming from an incident that occurred July 9 at a residence in the 700 block of Maryland Avenue.

Investigators allege Zavitz unlawfully entered the residence, threatened the occupants with a weapon and threatened to set the home on fire.

Following his arrest, Zavitz appeared before a District Court commissioner and was remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center, where he is being held without bond.

He is charged with third-degree burglary, fourth-degree burglary, arson threat, dangerous weapon with intent to injure, disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace.

The charges are allegations, and Zavitz is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
