DC man arrested after allegedly brandishing handgun in public

WASHINGTON, DC — A man has been arrested after allegedly brandishing a handgun at a parent and their young child during a disturbing encounter in Northeast Washington, police said.

The incident unfolded around 11:40 a.m. Wednesday near 10th Street and H Street Northeast.

Authorities said the suspect approached the victim and repeatedly attempted to speak with them as they walked with a child.

When the victim asked to be left alone, the situation escalated.

Police say the suspect pulled out a handgun and waved it around before fleeing the scene.

No injuries were reported.

Following an investigation, detectives identified and arrested Tayvon Jones, 33, of Southeast DC.

He has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, carrying a pistol without a license and felon in possession.

Officers also recovered a handgun at the time of his arrest.
