Prince Georges County player cashes in huge with scratch off ticket
HYATTSVILLE, MD — A Prince George’s County man who realized he had not bought a lottery ticket in more than two weeks decided to make a quick stop on the way home from work — a decision that turned into a $50K scratch-off jackpot.
The Hyattsville resident told Maryland Lottery officials he purchased a $20 $50,000 Cash scratch-off ticket after feeling something had been missing from his routine.
“I get a few tickets every week or so,” the player said while claiming the prize Monday at Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
The winning ticket was purchased at Food Stop Mini located at 4820 Boiling Brook Parkway in Rockville.
After scratching the ticket at home, the man said he initially struggled to believe the result was real.
“I thought at first there was no way it could be real,” he told lottery officials.
Instead of immediately verifying the ticket, the player said he waited until the next day before asking a store clerk to scan it.
“I asked the clerk to check it for me and the biggest smile broke out on her face,” he said. “I was ecstatic.”
The $50,000 Cash scratch-off game launched in December 2022 with 160 top prizes. Maryland Lottery officials said 54 top prizes and 64 second-tier $5,000 prizes remain unclaimed.
Food Stop Mini will receive a $500 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
