Medical brace filled with drugs sparks felony charge in Charlottesville

Woman charged after drugs found hidden in medical brace at Charlottesville jail

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — A drug drop disguised as a medical delivery led to felony charges for an Augusta County woman after staff at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail uncovered nearly 100 doses of Suboxone hidden inside a brace left at the facility’s front desk.

The incident happened on the morning of December 24, when jail personnel conducting a routine screening of incoming items discovered the contraband stashed inside what appeared to be a standard medical support brace. By the time staff made the discovery, the individual who had dropped off the brace was no longer on the premises.

Following an investigation by the Albemarle County Police Department, 32-year-old Brooke A. Maddox of Verona was identified as the person who brought the item into the jail. Authorities charged her with one felony count of delivering a controlled substance to a prisoner.

Investigators did not say whether the intended recipient was identified or if similar attempts had been made in the past. It remains unclear how the drugs were concealed so thoroughly within the brace that they passed initial inspection.

Maddox turned herself in at the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday and was released the same day on an unsecured bond. Police confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with information related to the case is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 434-977-4000. Anonymous tips are accepted.
