A fatal confrontation captured on surveillance video led to a decades-long prison sentence after a Memphis jury rejected a self-defense claim in the killing of a community activist.
MEMPHIS, TN – A woman convicted of killing a longtime Memphis community advocate during a dispute at a strip mall will serve 25 years in prison without the possibility of early release, prosecutors announced this week. The sentence follows a jury’s finding that Tifanee Wright, 37, was guilty of second-degree murder in the death of 60-year-old Yvonne Nelson.
The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office said Wright argued she acted in self-defense, but jurors did not accept that claim. “Wright claimed she acted in self-defense, but jurors rejected that defense and found her guilty,” the office said in a statement.
Surveillance footage and 911 calls detail the shooting
The shooting happened on the night of Aug. 13, 2022, near the intersection of Yale Road and Covington Pike. Surveillance video obtained by local television showed Wright and Nelson interacting outside a strip mall before moving out of the camera’s frame.
According to the case presented at trial, the two were arguing about money when Wright pulled a gun and shot Nelson in the face and neck. Multiple 911 calls followed, including one report that “the suspect fled the scene in a newer model black Infiniti sedan.”
During the trial, the court reviewed the footage as part of the prosecution’s case. The judge later pointed to Wright’s actions after the shooting as significant. “She left the woman to die like she was worthless,” the judge said, according to local reporting.
Victim remembered for community advocacy
Nelson was widely known in Memphis for her work on neighborhood issues, including efforts to improve public safety, reduce crime, and promote fair elections. Her death, family members said, has had lasting effects.
“During the hearing, her daughter presented a plaque recognizing Dr. Nelson’s work as a community advocate and described her as a brilliant, spiritual, and larger-than-life presence whose loss continues to be felt by family and friends,” the district attorney’s office said.
Wright’s mother addressed the court during sentencing, apologizing to Nelson’s family and expressing a desire to take her daughter’s place in prison.
The sentence of 25 years is to be served at 100 percent, meaning Wright will not be eligible for early release.
