MORRISTOWN, NJ — Rep. Mikie Sherrill is calling on her Republican colleagues in Congress to reject a bill she says would harm New Jersey families, accusing GOP lawmakers of backing the legislation at the direction of former President Donald Trump.
Sherrill, a Democrat representing New Jersey’s 11th District, released a video Tuesday voicing her opposition to the bill, which she claims would result in widespread financial and healthcare setbacks for residents across the state.
“This bill actually harms New Jersey families,” Sherrill said. “That’s why so many Republicans are throwing a fit about it. But at the end of the day, they’ll probably just head over and vote for it because Trump told them to do it.”
Sherrill argued that the legislation would eliminate health coverage for 400,000 people, raise utility bills, and increase taxes by $30 billion in New Jersey. She also said it would raise mortgage costs and fail to reduce the national deficit, instead adding trillions.
She specifically urged members of the New Jersey congressional delegation to reject the proposal, framing the vote as a choice between loyalty to Trump and support for working families.
“Do what’s right for families across this country,” Sherrill said. “Certainly to my colleagues in the New Jersey delegation, do what’s right by working families in New Jersey.”
The bill has yet to receive a final vote in the House.
