A confrontation outside a Kansas City fast food restaurant turned violent Monday night when a woman allegedly tracked down her former boyfriend, shot him, and smashed his new girlfriend’s car, according to court documents.
KANSAS CITY, MO – A Missouri man was hospitalized after he was shot in the chest outside a McDonald’s on North Indiana Avenue, in what investigators describe as a targeted encounter involving his ex-girlfriend, Jolie Koop. The shooting followed a series of events that police say began with the suspect allegedly trailing the victim and his new partner across the city.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed by Kansas City police, the victim told his father he was being followed Monday night by “his crazy ex-girlfriend and possibly her mother.” The father later wrote on Facebook, “This crazy chick Jolie Koop (his ex) just shot my son,” adding, “They better find her first.”
Sequence of events leading to shooting
The affidavit states the victim and his new girlfriend were driving in separate vehicles when they noticed a Buick, allegedly driven by Koop with her mother as a passenger, following them. “He began taking random turns … to see if the Buick would follow,” the affidavit recounts. “The Buick followed.”
Earlier in the evening, the new girlfriend told police she received a call claiming her Mercedes was being towed from the victim’s apartment. When the pair checked, “did not observe anything which would indicate the vehicle was in the process of being towed,” according to the affidavit. She told officers she believed she was being “set up.”
The situation escalated near a McDonald’s at 8650 North Indiana Avenue, where the girlfriend’s Mercedes became disabled as the couple attempted to leave. Investigators say Koop and her mother pulled up behind the vehicle, exited their car, and began striking the Mercedes with a “wooden bat.”
Gunfire captured on surveillance
Police say the victim approached Koop while “holding a knife at his side” when the shooting occurred. “Jolie fired two rounds at [the victim], striking him both times,” the affidavit states.
The victim then called his father, telling him he “was shot by Jolie at the McDonald’s” and needed medical help. According to the Clay County Prosecutor’s Office, “The victim’s father arrived at the scene and took the victim to a local fire station,” adding, “The incident was caught on surveillance camera by local businesses.”
Footage reviewed by investigators reportedly shows Koop and her mother damaging the Mercedes before the shooting. The victim’s father alleged online that Koop’s mother participated in the attack, writing, “She is 100% an accessory to the crime,” though no charges have been filed against her.
The father later said his son remained hospitalized in “stable” condition but continued to face complications. “He had another surgery today to stop bleeding from his lungs and clotting,” he wrote. A relative added, “The bullet went through his lung and out his back, an inch from his spinal cord.”
Prior case and charges
Court records indicate this is not the first alleged violent incident involving Koop and the victim. Police say she was previously charged in November with third-degree domestic assault and unlawful use of a weapon for an earlier confrontation.
In the current case, Koop faces charges of first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, and armed criminal action. She is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on May 29.
