A 13-year-old boy and his mother were pulled to safety after a coordinated rescue by Atlantic City police and firefighters when both became stranded in the ocean.
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — A 13-year-old boy and his mother were rescued after they became stranded in the Atlantic Ocean off Atlantic City, prompting a coordinated response from police and firefighters.
According to the Atlantic City Police Department, officers responded on June 17 to the beach near Iowa Avenue after receiving reports of swimmers in distress.
Responding officers located the 13-year-old approximately 200 yards offshore and his mother about 100 yards from the shoreline.
As officers organized the rescue, members of the Atlantic City Fire Department arrived with a personal watercraft and helped bring both swimmers safely back to shore.
Police said Sgt. Nicholas Berardis coordinated the response and ensured first responders had the necessary rescue equipment.
The rescue involved Atlantic City Police Lt. James Herbert, Sgt. Nicholas Berardis, Sgt. Ermindo Marsini, Officer Riley Flynn, Officer Kyle Riordan, Officer Nicholas Timek, Officer Tyler Dailey and Officer Kevin Puca.
Atlantic City Fire Department personnel who participated included Firefighter Cole Culleny, Firefighter Andrew Kyle, Firefighter Frank Walsh and Firefighter Dominic Gitto.
Police credited the coordinated efforts of both departments with successfully rescuing the two swimmers.
The Atlantic City Police Department reminded residents and visitors to swim only at guarded beaches during designated lifeguard hours and to heed posted warnings about rip currents, waves and changing ocean conditions.
