Mt. Oliver woman charged in methadone death of one-year-old girl
Pittsburgh, PA – A 60-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the death of a one-year-old child who died last year from methadone intoxication, Allegheny County police announced Wednesday.
On November 8, 2024, Mt. Oliver Police responded to a home in the 300 block of Church Avenue, where they found one-year-old Ro’Mya Shields unresponsive. She was transported to a hospital but was later pronounced dead. Detectives from the Allegheny County Police Homicide Unit took over the investigation.
Months later, on April 3, 2025, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner ruled the child’s death accidental, caused by methadone intoxication. Investigators determined that at the time of the incident, Ro’Mya was under the care of Veronica Anglin, 60, who was prescribed methadone. Prescription bottles were found in the home during the response.
After consulting with the district attorney’s office, detectives charged Anglin with involuntary manslaughter, endangering the welfare of children, and recklessly endangering another person. She was taken into custody on August 27 and booked into the Allegheny County Jail.
