North Lauderdale, FL – A New Jersey native and retired U.S. Army veteran was fatally shot Tuesday afternoon after an argument over a parking space escalated outside a Walmart in North Lauderdale, according to authorities.
Bart DiGuglielmo, 62, originally from Hammonton, was shot during the confrontation in the store’s parking lot. He was transported to Broward Health Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.
Video captures deadly confrontation
Video circulating online shows DiGuglielmo arguing with an unidentified woman before she suddenly pulls out a handgun and fires a single shot. The retired staff sergeant clutched his stomach before collapsing to the ground.
Witnesses told investigators the woman continued yelling at DiGuglielmo as he lay wounded. Authorities have said DiGuglielmo was unarmed during the confrontation.
Investigation remains ongoing
The woman has claimed she acted in self-defense, and no charges had been announced as of Friday while investigators review the evidence, including surveillance footage and witness statements.
DiGuglielmo was a Desert Storm veteran, retired staff sergeant, longtime nurse, and lifelong Philadelphia Eagles fan. After leaving New Jersey, he moved to Florida to be closer to his daughter and family.
