Newark announces street closures for April 15 food distribution event

Drive-Up and Go program expected to impact traffic near West Kinney Street corridor.

NEWARK, N.J. – The Newark Department of Public Safety has issued a traffic advisory ahead of a planned food distribution event that will close several streets in the city’s South Ward on Wednesday, April 15.

Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda Sr. said the closures are necessary to accommodate the city’s “Drive-Up and Go” food distribution program, which is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at the intersection of West Kinney Street and Boyd Street. Road closures will be in effect from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. to allow for setup, distribution, and cleanup.

The impacted roadways include West Kinney Street between Irvine Turner Boulevard and Sayer Street, Boyd Street between 17th Avenue and West Kinney Street, Livingston Street between Springfield Avenue and West Kinney Street, and Channeyfield Way between Branch Court and West Kinney Street.

The Newark Police Division will oversee traffic control in the area, with officials warning that the closures may affect a heavily traveled section of the city during daytime hours.

City-led food distribution events have become an ongoing effort in Newark to address food insecurity and support residents in need, often drawing large crowds and requiring coordinated traffic management.

Motorists are advised to plan alternate routes and expect delays while the event is underway. Officials thanked residents in advance for their patience and cooperation.

The advisory remains in effect for the scheduled hours, with normal traffic patterns expected to resume after the event concludes.
