Newark police search for armed suspect after rifle-style gunfire reported on Hawthorne Avenue

Newark, NJ – Authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man caught on surveillance footage holding a rifle-style weapon near the scene of a shooting reported Saturday morning on Hawthorne Avenue.

According to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda Sr., officers responded around 10:11 a.m. on January 17 to the area of Hawthorne Avenue and Elizabeth Avenue after receiving reports of shots fired. Though no injuries or property damage were found, investigators recovered six spent shell casings at the scene.

Surveillance footage from the area captured a male suspect arriving in a white GMC SUV, exiting the vehicle while visibly armed with what appeared to be a rifle. Police have released an image of the suspect and are now seeking the public’s assistance in identifying him.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Newark Police Division’s 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477). Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the department’s website at npd.newarkpublicsafety.org. All tips remain confidential and may be eligible for a reward.
