Newark police searching for suspect who stole wallet during street encounter

Newark, NJ – Police are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a man captured on video stealing a victim’s wallet during a confrontation on a city street last weekend, according to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda Sr.

The incident occurred around 10:35 a.m. on December 28 near Sumo Village Court and Thomas Street. Surveillance footage shows the suspect approaching the victim and engaging in a brief argument. As the victim attempted to walk away, the suspect grabbed him from behind in what appeared to be a bear hug. Police said the victim broke free and continued walking, unaware that the suspect had reached into his rear pocket and taken his wallet.

The suspect then fled east on Thomas Street. Investigators have released images of the man in hopes the public can help identify him.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Newark Police Division’s 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477). Anonymous tips may also be submitted through the division’s website at npd.newarkpublicsafety.org. Authorities said all tips remain confidential and may be eligible for a reward.
