Retired Wythe County man wins $100K Powerball prize with one ticket and a lucky $1 upgrade
BARREN SPRINGS, VA – A simple stop at the Gobble Stop convenience store turned into a six-figure win for James Huff, who walked in for one Powerball ticket and walked away with a $100,000 prize.
Huff purchased an Easy Pick ticket for the September 6 drawing at the store located at 1496 Wysor Highway in Barren Springs. The winning numbers that night were 11-23-44-61-62, with the Powerball number 17. His ticket matched four of the first five numbers plus the Powerball — typically good for a $50,000 prize. But Huff had opted to spend an extra dollar for the Power Play, doubling his winnings to $100,000.
The retired Wythe County resident said he plans to use the money to pay bills and make improvements to his home.
Powerball draws take place three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at 10:59 p.m. The odds of matching all six numbers to win the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million, while the overall odds of winning any Powerball prize are 1 in 25.

Virginia Lottery officials confirmed Huff’s win and emphasized that all profits from the sale of Lottery tickets go toward K-12 education. Wythe County, where Huff resides, received more than $3.9 million in Lottery funds last fiscal year.
Statewide, the Lottery raised over $901 million for public schools in Fiscal Year 2025, representing about 10 percent of Virginia’s total K-12 education budget.
