BRONX, N.Y. — A pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle early Monday morning on the Major Deegan Expressway near the Macombs Dam Bridge, according to the New York City Police Department. The incident occurred on September 2, 2024, at approximately 1:50 a.m. within the confines of the 44th Precinct.

Police responded to a 911 call reporting a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival, officers found an unidentified male in his 40s, unconscious and unresponsive. The man was transported by EMS to NYC Health and Hospitals/Lincoln, where he was later pronounced dead.

An investigation conducted by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad revealed that the pedestrian had been attempting to cross the Major Deegan Expressway from the east side to the west side when he was struck by a 2008 Toyota Rav4 traveling southbound. The driver of the vehicle, identified as 43-year-old William Day of Yonkers, was arrested shortly after the incident.

Day was charged in connection with the fatal collision at approximately 3:58 a.m. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the circumstances leading up to the crash. The identity of the deceased pedestrian is pending notification of his family.
