Pedestrian struck and killed crossing Route 36 in Long Branch

FREEHOLD, NJ – A man was killed Monday evening after being hit by a vehicle while crossing a busy stretch of Route 36 in Long Branch.

Police say the crash happened just after 6 p.m. near the intersection of Route 36 and Branchport Avenue.

The victim, identified as 74-year-old Fernando Pinho, was attempting to cross from the southbound side of the highway to the northbound lanes when he was struck by a BMW SUV.

He was transported to Monmouth Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 9 p.m.

Investigation ongoing

The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office said the investigation remains active, with assistance from the county’s Serious Collision Analysis Response Team and the Long Branch Police Department. Authorities have not filed any charges or issued summonses in connection with the crash.
