PHILADELPHIA, P.A. — A Philadelphia police officer opened fire on a suspect early Saturday morning following a chaotic pursuit connected to illegal car meet-ups, authorities said.
On January 11, 2025, around 11:15 p.m., officers monitoring illegal car gatherings responded to reports of a car meet at the Target parking lot on 4000 Monument Street. Police observed several vehicles leaving the scene erratically, including a red Chevrolet Camaro with Florida plates. A police lieutenant recognized the driver as someone previously involved in illegal car meets.
The Camaro sped off and evaded officers on I-76 East.
At approximately 2:00 a.m., officers assigned to the Car Meet Detail located the same Camaro parked on the 800 block of West Master Street. As officers in an unmarked vehicle requested backup, the Camaro reversed into a marked police wagon and struck it twice while attempting to flee.
During the incident, one officer was struck by the Camaro and fell, hitting her head. In response, a 14-year veteran officer discharged his firearm once, striking the passenger-side window of the vehicle.
The Camaro fled the scene and was later involved in multiple collisions during a high-speed chase on I-95, including striking civilian and police vehicles. Due to the dangerous conditions, the pursuit was called off.
Upper Darby Police later located the heavily damaged, unoccupied Camaro. The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Quron Banks, was found at Mercy-Fitzgerald Hospital with a gunshot wound to the neck and is in stable condition.
The injured officer, a 36-year-old woman with one year on the force, was treated at Jefferson Methodist Hospital and has since been released.
Banks has been charged with aggravated assault, causing a catastrophe, fleeing or attempting to elude police, recklessly endangering another person (REAP), and related offenses.
The officer who discharged his weapon has been placed on administrative duty pending internal investigations.
