Pittsfield Man Charged With Murder in Fatal Hall Place Stabbing

A 24-year-old Springfield man is being held without bail after prosecutors say he fatally stabbed a Pittsfield resident during an altercation outside a Hall Place residence.

Pittsfield, MA – A Springfield man has been charged with murder in connection with a fatal stabbing that claimed the life of a Pittsfield resident Friday night, according to the Berkshire County District Attorney’s Office.

Zyrus Jaynes, 24, was arraigned Monday in Central Berkshire District Court on a charge of murder in the death of Jesse Gray, 36, of Pittsfield. Prosecutors said Jaynes is being held without the right to bail.

Key Points

• Zyrus Jaynes, 24, was charged with murder following a fatal stabbing in Pittsfield.
• Jesse Gray, 36, died after suffering a stab wound during an altercation on Hall Place.
• Jaynes was taken into custody Saturday after returning to the residence where the incident occurred.

Pittsfield Police responded to 10 Hall Place at approximately 9:57 p.m. Friday following reports of a stabbing. Officers arrived to find Gray suffering from a stab wound to his left side and immediately began providing lifesaving aid.

Gray was transported to Berkshire Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.

Investigation identifies suspect

According to investigators, the stabbing occurred following an altercation outside the multi-unit residence on Hall Place. Witnesses told police that Gray had driven into the property’s driveway when Jaynes allegedly approached him in what authorities described as an elevated manner.

The confrontation escalated, and prosecutors allege Jaynes stabbed Gray before fleeing the area. Detectives identified Jaynes as a suspect through witness interviews conducted after the incident.

Arrest made Saturday morning

Authorities said police received information shortly after 7 a.m. Saturday that Jaynes had returned to the Hall Place residence. Officers responded and took him into custody without incident.

Following Monday’s arraignment, Berkshire District Attorney Timothy Shugrue said investigators have found no evidence that Jaynes and Gray knew one another prior to the encounter.

“At this point it appears that Zyrus Jaynes and Jesse Gray had no prior connection before Friday’s stabbing,” Shugrue said. “This senseless act led to the death of Jesse Gray and forever impacted the families of both Mr. Gray and the Defendant as well as the community.”

Prior criminal cases cited

Prosecutors also noted that Jaynes had two pending criminal cases from the summer of 2025. Those cases included charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, and a separate assault and battery charge.

As a result of the murder charge, bail was revoked in both pending cases. Court records indicate prosecutors previously sought to have Jaynes held without bail in one of the earlier cases.
