Police seek public’s help in locating fugitive wanted for questioning in Newark shooting

NEWARK, N.J. — Authorities are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a 27-year-old East Orange man wanted for questioning in connection with a shooting earlier this month, Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda Sr. announced Wednesday.

Jamal Malik Williams is being sought by police following a shooting on January 4, 2025, in the 400 block of North 5th Street. Officers responded to reports of gunfire around 10:13 p.m. and discovered a 9mm shell casing at the front entrance of an apartment building and in its hallway, according to investigators.

Detectives said the shooting caused damage to the common area hallway and a second-floor apartment, but no injuries were reported. Authorities have not disclosed further details about the circumstances surrounding the incident or Williams’ potential involvement.

The Newark Police Division’s Shooting Response Team continues to investigate the incident. Director Miranda encouraged anyone with information regarding Williams’ whereabouts to contact the department’s 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477).

Anonymous tips remain confidential, and rewards may be offered for information leading to Williams or an arrest.
