Minor outages have been reported in several Ocean County communities Thursday as temperatures climbed above 100 degrees, increasing demand on the electrical system.
Ocean County, NJ – Scattered power outages were reported across Ocean County on Thursday afternoon as dangerous heat pushed temperatures above 100 degrees throughout much of central New Jersey. According to Jersey Central Power & Light’s outage map, approximately 926 customers were without electricity across its service territory as of 1:02 p.m., with a number of the outages affecting Ocean County communities.
While no widespread blackout has been reported, the outages appear to be isolated and relatively small, with most impacting fewer than 20 customers at individual locations. Utility officials continue monitoring the system as air conditioning use drives electricity demand higher during the extreme heat.
Isolated outages reported countywide
The outage map shows scattered service interruptions stretching from the northern barrier island communities through Toms River, Brick, Manchester Township, Berkeley Township, Lacey Township, and portions of southern Ocean County. Most outage markers indicate only a handful of customers are affected.
No major outage clusters were visible Thursday afternoon, suggesting the disruptions are localized rather than the result of a larger transmission or substation failure.

Jersey Central Power & Light updates its outage map approximately every 15 minutes, though the utility notes it may take up to 35 minutes for newly reported outages to appear online.
Extreme heat increases electrical demand
Thursday’s extreme heat has placed additional strain on the regional power grid as residents and businesses rely heavily on air conditioning to stay cool. Temperatures climbed above 100 degrees in parts of central New Jersey, with heat index values reaching dangerous levels.
Although isolated outages can occur for a variety of reasons, periods of sustained high temperatures often coincide with increased electrical demand and equipment operating under heavier loads.
Residents experiencing an outage are encouraged to report it directly to Jersey Central Power & Light and avoid downed power lines, treating them as energized and dangerous. Utility crews continue responding to individual outage reports throughout the day.
