Teen’s death linked to nuclear plant radiation exposure in lawsuit
Teen’s death linked to nuclear plant radiation exposure in lawsuit
Piketon, OH
A teenager died from complications of a bone marrow transplant after developing a rare genetic condition linked to radiation from a nearby nuclear plant, according to a lawsuit filed by her mother. Cheyenne Dunham was 19 when she passed away in November 2015 after suffering severe health issues.
Julia Dunham claims radiation exposure from the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant caused her daughter’s medical complications. The lawsuit alleges that Cheyenne was diagnosed with a 12-inch blood clot in her hip and clots in her lungs.
From birth until her early teens, Cheyenne consumed produce grown near the plant and played in a creek in close proximity to it. Julia Dunham filed the complaint against Centrus Energy in late November after becoming the administrator of Cheyenne’s estate in October.
Officials shut down the facility in 2001 due to environmental concerns, prompted by the proximity of a school and residences. In May 2019, Zahn’s Corner Middle School was closed after enriched uranium was discovered in the building.
Cheyenne attended the school for three years from fourth through sixth grade. The lawsuit alleges she was exposed to radionuclides exceeding federal regulatory limits while at Zahn’s Corner and in the Piketon community.
From birth until about age five, the family lived at a house bordering the plant. Cheyenne then went to school at Jasper Elementary, also located near the site.
At age 16, Cheyenne began experiencing health issues, which included a sudden change in leg color. Following her diagnosis of blood clots, she was transferred to an emergency room after initial evaluation at a family health facility.
She was prescribed blood thinners and referred to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, where she was diagnosed with GATA Deficiency, a condition affecting blood and the immune system. As a treatment measure, she underwent two bone marrow transplants to prevent Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
After her second transplant in February 2015, Cheyenne’s health declined. By May, her body was rejecting the transplant and her liver faced severe issues.
Cheyenne passed away at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital on November 15, 2015. The cause of death was attributed to Graft-versus-Host Disease, a complication linked to her prior treatments.
Julia Dunham states her daughter’s death directly resulted from exposure to radionuclides released from the plant. The complaint asserts that Cheyenne’s medical team never informed her or her mother about a potential link between her health issues and radiation exposure.
The lawsuit also cites studies indicating elevated radiation levels in the area surrounding the uranium plant, which corresponds with high cancer rates in Pike and adjacent counties. Preliminary data from the Ohio Department of Health reportedly shows a notable increase in childhood blood cancer in proximity to the plant.
Julia Dunham is seeking monetary damages for funeral and burial costs along with medical expenses. Centrus Energy has not responded to requests for comment.
Babysitter charged after infant suffers severe injuries
Babysitter charged after infant suffers severe injuries
Cincinnati, OH
A 37-year-old babysitter has been charged in connection with allegations of nearly beating an infant to death while the child’s mother was at work. Amanda L. Greger faces two counts of endangering a child and one count of tampering with evidence.
On November 10, staff at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital reported a suspected case of child abuse to the Goshen Township Police Department. The alleged incident occurred at a residence on Woodville Pike involving a 1-year-old girl.
The infant was admitted with “altered mental status” and appeared to have suffered multiple injuries, including blood seeping from her right eye and a diagnosed brain bleed.
Greger was watching the child overnight on November 9. According to the child’s mother, when she returned home the following morning, she found her daughter asleep and later noticed abrasions on the infant’s lip and lethargy.
Greger was reportedly asleep in the same room as the child when the mother found her daughter’s injuries. The babysitter was wearing a hooded sweatshirt covered in what appeared to be blood and vomit.
Police executed a search warrant at the Woodville Pike home and discovered bloodstains throughout the room. The child’s clothing was located in a washing machine, cleaned but still stained.
The victim’s mother confirmed the clothing found was the same her daughter wore prior to sustaining the injuries.
Lindsay Bilby, the victim’s aunt, established a GoFundMe page to assist the family. The page identified Melissa Bilby as the mother and described Greger as a trusted friend.
According to the fundraising page, the child is receiving intensive medical care for her injuries, which include a brain bleed, bruised organs, and fluid accumulation.
In court on Thursday, a judge ordered Greger to remain in detention on a $500,000 cash bond. If released, she must avoid contact with the victim or any other children. Greger is scheduled to return to court on December 1.

Confession in choking death leads to wrongful death lawsuit against DoorDash
Cincinnati, OH A DoorDash driver’s boyfriend has confessed to choking a man to death during a dispute over a driving incident. The incident has prompted a wrongful death lawsuit against the food delivery service, alleging improper conduct by the couple involved.
Lavontez Davis, 26, pleaded guilty on Monday to charges of strangulation and involuntary manslaughter for the October 2023 death of Jason McKinnon. The lawsuit, filed by McKinnon’s widow, claims Davis and his girlfriend, Shimya Berry, were working for DoorDash at the time of the altercation.
According to the legal complaint, after the altercation, the couple resumed their deliveries. The complaint states they picked up a DoorDash order shortly after the incident and completed the delivery.
Witnesses reported Davis exited the vehicle and approached McKinnon, who had shouted at Berry for driving the wrong way on a one-way street. The confrontation escalated, resulting in Davis placing McKinnon in a chokehold.
Days after the incident, McKinnon died from his injuries. Davis, originally charged with murder and felonious assault, was sentenced to 15 to 20 years in prison.
The civil lawsuit names Davis, Berry, and DoorDash as defendants, claiming their actions contributed to McKinnon’s death. The lawsuit also includes statements from family members expressing the immense loss suffered due to the incident.
McKinnon’s widow, Emily Livingston, stated that the event has caused unbearable pain for her and her family. DoorDash issued a statement expressing condolences, emphasizing that Davis was not a registered driver for the company.

CINCINNATI, OH – A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of his former manager outside a Taco Bell in Cincinnati. Jonathan Morris faces one count of murder following the incident that occurred early on August 29.
According to law enforcement, Morris allegedly shot 32-year-old Ryan Johnson just after midnight in the parking lot of the fast-food restaurant on Gest Road. Morris had reportedly been fired from his job the day before the shooting.
“They are devastated by this,” prosecutor David Hickenlooper stated during a court session on Thursday, speaking of the victim’s family. Johnson was discovered by police suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
At the time of the incident, Johnson was not in uniform. Witnesses provided police with a description of the alleged shooter and the motive for the crime is believed to relate to Morris’s termination.
During a court hearing, bond was set at $500,000 after the prosecution requested a $2 million bond. Morris’s attorney indicated that his client could not afford the bond, and noted that Morris is a primary caregiver for his young child.
Morris previously faced an aggravated robbery charge in September 2023 but was acquitted in March. Police stated efforts to locate Morris took weeks before his capture.
If released on bond, Morris will be subject to electronic monitoring and house arrest. The case continues to unfold as both sides prepare for further legal proceedings.
