Seaside Heights Braces for Memorial Day Crowds After Nearly 90 Arrests and Multiple Stabbings Last Summer

Boardwalk Shutdown, Stabbings, Arrests: Seaside Heights Prepares for Busy Holiday Return

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, NJ — One year after violent fights, stabbings, and chaotic crowds overwhelmed the Seaside Heights boardwalk during Memorial Day weekend, local officials are preparing for another massive influx of visitors with tighter security, curfews, and an expanded police presence.

The 2025 holiday weekend marked one of the most turbulent starts to the summer season in recent memory for the Jersey Shore destination. Authorities reported nearly 90 arrests over the course of the weekend, including dozens of incidents involving juveniles, as police struggled to contain large fights and disorderly crowds along the boardwalk.

The unrest forced officers to shut down sections of the boardwalk after midnight as violence escalated into the early morning hours.

Violent Holiday Weekend Triggered Emergency Measures

According to officials, Seaside Heights police made at least 73 arrests during the core Memorial Day weekend period, including 52 adults and 21 juveniles. By the end of the holiday Monday, the total number of arrests approached 90.

Police responded to repeated altercations involving large groups of teens and young adults gathered along the boardwalk and surrounding streets.

Authorities also investigated at least three separate stabbing incidents during the weekend. Victims, ranging in age from 18 to 22, suffered injuries to areas including their backs and hips, according to reports.

Investigators said none of the stabbing victims cooperated with law enforcement.

Seaside Heights has implemented strict security measures and ordinances on the boardwalk to manage crowds and ensure public safety. Local law enforcement patrols are highly active, and the borough enforces curfews, modified boardwalk hours, and bag restrictions

Bag Restrictions

  • From April 1 through September 30, no bags larger than 8″ x 6″ x 8″ are permitted on the boardwalk between 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.

As crowds became increasingly unruly late Sunday night into Monday morning, Seaside Heights Police Chief Thomas Boyd ordered a proactive shutdown of the boardwalk shortly after midnight in an effort to restore order and disperse crowds.

Heavy Police Presence Planned for 2026 Holiday Weekend

Town officials said preparations for this year’s Memorial Day weekend are already underway, with law enforcement agencies coordinating security plans designed to prevent a repeat of last year’s violence.

Before the 2025 holiday weekend, Seaside Heights had already implemented a 10 p.m. curfew for anyone under 18 and coordinated patrol efforts with the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department and county SWAT teams.

Following the violence, local leaders and business owners began discussing stricter long-term crowd control measures, including earlier mandatory boardwalk closures and possible backpack restrictions.

• Police investigated multiple stabbings and shut down the boardwalk after midnight
• Officials are increasing security and enforcing curfews ahead of this year’s holiday crowds

Officials Focus on Preventing Another Chaotic Start to Summer

The violence drew widespread attention across New Jersey and reignited debates over public safety at major Shore destinations during peak tourism weekends.

Officials blamed much of the disruption on unusually large gatherings of teens and young adults, saying crowd behavior became significantly more aggressive than in previous summers.

Business owners along the boardwalk expressed concerns last year that the unrest could damage Seaside Heights’ reputation ahead of the busy summer tourism season.

At the same time, local officials emphasized that the vast majority of visitors came to the Shore peacefully and that law enforcement’s goal is to prevent isolated incidents from escalating into widespread disorder.

The increased security planning comes as Jersey Shore towns continue balancing public safety concerns with the economic importance of summer tourism, especially during high-traffic weekends like Memorial Day.

Boardwalk Safety Remains Top Priority

Police have not yet announced whether additional restrictions or emergency orders will be implemented for the upcoming holiday weekend, but officials said public safety remains the top priority.

Law enforcement agencies are expected to maintain a visible presence throughout the area, particularly during nighttime hours when large crowds typically gather on the boardwalk.

Authorities are also urging parents to monitor juveniles traveling to Shore towns during the holiday weekend, citing the large number of arrests involving minors during the 2025 disturbances.

Seaside Heights officials said preparations and enforcement plans will continue leading up to Memorial Day weekend as the borough attempts to avoid another violent start to the summer season.
