NEWARK, N.J. — An 18-year-old man from Somerville has been arrested after allegedly injuring a Newark police officer while attempting to flee the scene of a drag racing incident early Sunday morning.
Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr. announced the arrest of Wyatt Bowden, who faces charges including aggravated assault on a police officer, eluding, and possession of a weapon (vehicle). The incident occurred around 1:02 a.m. at Frelinghuysen Avenue and Miller Street, where officers responded to reports of erratic driving.
According to police, individuals began fleeing the area as officers arrived. While attempting to escape in his vehicle, Bowden reportedly drove over the foot of a Newark officer. The injured officer was transported to University Hospital, where they are listed in stable condition.
“This arrest should put daredevil drivers on alert that the streets of Newark are completely off-limits to anyone planning to drag race or showcase their hazardous driving stunts here,” Director Miranda said, emphasizing the risk such activities pose to public safety.
Bowden was taken into custody at the scene and remains in police custody as authorities continue their investigation. Police have warned that reckless driving incidents will be met with swift and severe enforcement.
