Suspect accused of smashing into DC business caught hours later

Police say officers recognized the suspect the same day after a Northwest Washington business was burglarized and property was stolen

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A man accused of breaking into a Northwest Washington business and stealing property was arrested just hours later after officers spotted him near the scene, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

Police said officers responded at approximately 5:30 a.m. Thursday to the 500 block of Florida Avenue Northwest following a reported burglary at a business.

Investigators said the suspect forcibly destroyed a patio door to gain entry into the establishment.

Once inside, the suspect allegedly stole property before fleeing the area prior to officers arriving.

Later that day, officers assigned to the Third District who were familiar with the investigation spotted the suspect in the immediate area where the burglary occurred.

The suspect was taken into custody without incident.

Following the investigation, police charged Kevin Freeman, 32, of Northwest Washington, with second-degree burglary.

Authorities have not released additional details regarding the property that was taken.

The investigation remains ongoing.
