CARROL COUNTY, GA – A police pursuit in Carrol County, Georgia led to the shooting of three responding officers and the death of one of the suspects. Carrol County Sheriff Terry Langley today said Georgia police officers were fired upon during the chase.
He said one suspect is dead, one in custody and three officers were hit, including one Carrol County deputy with a gunshot wound to the arm.
The initial traffic stop was made by the Georgia Highway Patrol. Captain Brandon Dawson said at around 3:30 am, an officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle traveling 120 miles per hour on I-20.
On his approach to the car, the driver and passenger fled the scene. The officer attempted to block the vehicle but was shot at by the passenger with a rifle, disabling his patrol vehicle. Local agencies responded to the chase as Carrolton police officers joined the pursuit as the suspects drove through the city.
Carrolton Police Chief Joel Richards said the passenger of the vehicle then shot at Sgt. Rob Halloway, striking him, causing him to crash into a utility pole. The chase continued through Villa Rica. Chief Michael Mansour said his officers were also shot at, one struck twice. He is in the hospital undergoing treatment.
