Teen killed in Southern Avenue crash involving stolen car and DUI driver

December 11, 2024

WASHINGTON, DC – A 16-year-old boy lost his life early Tuesday morning in a crash at Southern Avenue and Reed Terrace Road SE, involving a driver later charged with DUI, police confirmed.

The collision took place just after 4 a.m. on December 10 at the D.C.-Maryland border. Police say the teen, Areohn Savoy of Upper Marlboro, MD, was driving a Lexus that ran a stop sign, colliding with a Jeep Wrangler entering the intersection.

Emergency crews pulled Savoy and another 16-year-old boy from the Lexus, transporting both to a hospital. Savoy later succumbed to his injuries, while the other teen’s condition remains unknown. The Jeep’s driver and passenger were unharmed.

Investigators determined the Lexus had been reported stolen out of Prince George’s County, MD, and recovered a firearm from the vehicle. Sean Stokes, 36, of Clinton, MD, who was driving the Jeep, was arrested and charged with Driving Under the Influence.

This incident marks the second fatal crash on Southern Avenue within 24 hours, according to police.
