Third DUI for Newark man ends in late-night police standoff

Newark man charged after fleeing police in third DUI incident

Newark, DE — A Newark man is facing a third DUI charge along with multiple traffic and criminal offenses after allegedly fleeing from police during a late-night encounter that began with a trespassing complaint and ended with a failed attempt to escape in a vehicle.

Just after midnight on January 8, officers responded to a call on Waterworks Lane regarding a man seen peering into windows before sitting in a parked car. Responding officers found 37-year-old Robert Davis inside the vehicle with the engine off and visibly impaired.

Davis told police he had walked to the wrong house after visiting a restaurant nearby. He declined assistance and walked away from the scene on foot.

Minutes later, Davis was spotted behind the wheel of the same vehicle driving on Kells Avenue. When an officer attempted a traffic stop, Davis refused to pull over. After briefly stopping, he allegedly sped off, prompting officers to abandon the pursuit out of safety concerns.

Police instead responded to Davis’s residence, where he was taken into custody without incident.

Davis was transported to Newark Police Headquarters and formally charged with his third DUI offense. Additional charges include disregarding a police signal, resisting arrest, aggressive and reckless driving, failure to obey traffic signals, unreasonable speed, and failure to signal.

He was brought before Justice of the Peace Court #2 by video and committed in lieu of $4,705 secured bail. Davis later posted bail and was released.
