Trucker almost trashes $1M winning ticket at Maryland rest stop

ELKTON, Md. — A truck driver from Columbia, Maryland, came dangerously close to tossing away a life-changing lottery ticket before deciding to give it one last look — and discovered it was worth $1 million.

The Howard County man, who chose to remain anonymous, stopped at the Travel Centers of America in Elkton on May 27 for coffee and replacement windshield wipers. Before hitting the road again, he purchased several Maryland Lottery scratch-offs, including a $20 MONOPOLY X100 ticket.

Believing the ticket was not a winner, he threw it in the trash. Moments later, he changed his mind, pulled it back out, and scanned it — only to be met with the message: “See Lottery.” That alert led him to confirm the ticket had indeed won one of the game’s $1 million top prizes.

The winner has not yet decided how to use the prize money, though he mentioned a second home might be a possibility. He plans to keep news of the win private for now.

Truck stop retailer earns bonus for big win

The winning ticket was sold at Travel Centers of America, located at 1400 Elkton Road in Cecil County. The retailer will receive a $1,000 bonus for selling the top-prize ticket.

The MONOPOLY X100 game launched in January and is part of a family of MONOPOLY-themed Maryland Lottery scratch-offs. Three $1 million top prizes remain. Players with non-winning MONOPOLY tickets can also enter them in the Lottery’s Second-Chance Promotion for a shot at additional prizes and rolling cash jackpots.
