Police say the suspects were arrested after investigators determined the killing stemmed from an ongoing dispute between people who knew each other.
BRENTWOOD, Md. — Two 16-year-olds have been arrested and charged as adults in the fatal shooting of a Hyattsville teenager in Brentwood, Prince George’s County police announced.
The suspects, both from Mount Rainier, are charged with the murder of 16-year-old Ruben Arevalo Saavedra of Hyattsville.
Officers responded at about 4:55 p.m. on June 12 to the 3700 block of Shepherd Street for a reported shooting.
When officers arrived, they found Arevalo Saavedra outside suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the preliminary investigation, detectives determined the shooting was connected to an ongoing dispute and that the victim and both suspects knew each other.
On Thursday, members of the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Fugitive Unit, working with the U.S. Marshals Service Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, arrested the two suspects.
Both teenagers have been charged as adults with first-degree murder, second-degree murder and related offenses.
They are being held by the Department of Corrections without bond.
The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit continues to investigate.
