Union County deli becomes millionaire maker overnight

TRENTON, N.J. — A Union County player won big in the May 14 Cash 4 Life drawing, claiming the second largest New Jersey Lottery prize of the year — a $7 million cash option — and triggering a $30,000 bonus for the store that sold the winning ticket.

The ticket was sold at Quick Stop Deli and Grill in Union Township. The winner has not yet come forward, but the retailer has already received its bonus for playing a key role in the jackpot win.

Retailers across New Jersey continue to benefit from strong lottery sales. In fiscal year 2024, nearly 6,800 retailers earned a combined $214 million in commissions and bonuses, according to the New Jersey Lottery. These businesses, often deeply rooted in their communities, rely on lottery traffic to support daily operations.

Quick Stop has been operated by Tom and Rita Patel for nearly 25 years. The couple is no stranger to lottery activity, but this jackpot brought added excitement and attention to their long-standing neighborhood shop.

Lottery wins support retailers and neighborhoods statewide

The Lottery’s impact extends beyond prize payouts, fueling local business and supporting the state’s public employee pension system under a 30-year agreement signed into law in 2017.

Cash 4 Life is a multi-state draw game available in nine states. Drawings are held daily at approximately 9 p.m., offering players a chance at lifetime payments or a lump sum prize.
