Abingdon woman hits $100K jackpot 14 years after $1M Virginia Lottery win
ABINGDON, VA – Evelyn Griffin is proving lightning can strike twice. Fourteen years after winning a $1 million prize, the Abingdon resident has won again—this time claiming the $100,000 top prize in the Virginia Lottery’s new scratch-off game Cashing Through the Snow.
Griffin purchased the winning ticket at Greenway Food Mart, located at 604 Cummings Street in Abingdon, and scratched it right there in the store. She said she plays new games regularly, which influenced her decision to try Cashing Through the Snow.
“When I saw I won, my chest started hurting a little bit,” she told lottery officials. This win, however, brought a calmer reaction than her 2011 million-dollar moment. “It feels just wonderful,” she said. Griffin plans to invest the winnings and pay bills.
The $5 Cashing Through the Snow game launched recently and offers prizes from $5 to $100,000. This is the first top prize claimed in the game, with four more still unclaimed. The odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 538,560.
All profits from the Virginia Lottery go toward K–12 public education. In the last fiscal year, Washington County—where Griffin resides—received over $6.7 million in lottery funding. The Lottery contributed more than $901 million statewide in Fiscal Year 2025, accounting for about 10% of Virginia’s K–12 education budget.
